The Amazon covers about 6.7 million km² of South America and pours out roughly a fifth of all the river water that reaches the world's oceans. Here water favored movement by canoe and riverboat more than by road.
The basin is not empty wilderness; it is a watery archive of settlements, gardens, port towns and Indigenous routes. Its difficulty is lateral: roads cut, but rivers already know the terrain.
