The Mountains Before the Sahara — Morocco · Atlas Mountains
The Atlas Mountains stretch about 2,500 km across northwest Africa and rise to Toubkal at 4,167 m. They help make Morocco a land of coastal cities, high valleys and desert-edge oases.
The range catches Atlantic and Mediterranean moisture before the Sahara takes over. Snow, passes and dry valleys gave the Maghreb not one geography, but several stacked close together.
