At its narrowest the Bosphorus is just ~700 m wide, yet it is the only gate between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean — and the line where Europe meets Asia. Istanbul, the great city straddling two continents, has guarded that seam for sixteen centuries.
A strait this narrow and this essential is a prize that makes a capital. Whoever holds the Bosphorus controls every grain ship and warship moving between the Black Sea and the wider world — which is why Constantine put his city here, and why empires have fought over it ever since. A few hundred metres of water can be worth an empire.
