The Caucasus forms a steep spine of more than 1,200 km between the Black Sea and the Caspian, rising to Elbrus at 5,642 m. Routes through and around it became gates between steppe, plateau and sea.
Look for the narrow places: Darial, Derbent, the coast roads. In a mountain wall, a pass is not just a path; it is a customs house, a fortress and a story machine.
