One River, Many Borders — Europe · Danube Basin

The Danube basin is shared by 19 countries and about 79 million people. Terrain made it a corridor across central and southeastern Europe, but politics turned that corridor into a chain of crossings, capitals and frontiers.

The river cuts through mountains at the Iron Gates, then spreads toward the Black Sea. It is a reminder that a river can connect cultures without erasing their borders.
