At the Strait of Dover only ~33 km of sea separate England from the continent — a gap narrow enough to see across, yet wide enough that no hostile army has conquered England by force across it since 1066.
A narrow sea is a cheap, permanent wall: the Armada, Napoleon and Hitler all stared across the Channel and never made it over. Spared the standing armies a land border demands, England could pour its strength into a navy instead — and a country defended by ships tends to look outward, to trade and empire. A little water changed a nation's whole disposition.
