At its narrowest, the Strait of Gibraltar is about 14 km wide. That small gap makes the Mediterranean an inland sea with a door, linking Atlantic weather, African shores and European ports.

A sea with one western mouth breeds chokepoints. Phoenician traders, Roman fleets, Andalusian crossings and modern shipping all had to reckon with the same narrow blue hinge.
