The Outback’s Hidden Basin — Australia · Great Artesian Basin

The Great Artesian Basin covers more than 1.7 million km², over one-fifth of Australia. In dry interior country, underground pressure and bores made pastoral settlement possible far from reliable rivers.

The surface map shows distance, heat and sparse rivers. The hidden map shows aquifers, springs and bore lines — a second geography that let sheep stations and towns hold on.
