The High Plains aquifer underlies about 174,000 square miles across eight U.S. states. It helped turn semi-arid plains into a major agricultural region, but the water was underground, finite and unevenly replenished.
The surface says grass and wind; the wells say corn, cattle and center-pivot circles. Modern settlement here is a pact with a buried resource the map cannot see from above.
