Where the Land Decides — China · The Hu Line

A line drawn from Heihe to Tengchong splits China in two — the ~44% of the land southeast of it holds about 94% of the people, almost unchanged since 1935.

West to east, China steps down in three giant terraces — the Tibetan Plateau, the central highlands and basins, then the eastern plains. Each step down, the people grow denser; the line Hu Huanyong drew in 1935 has barely moved in ninety years.
