The River That Needed Engineers — Pakistan · Indus Basin
The Indus basin joins an ancient urban corridor to a modern irrigation giant. Mohenjo-daro flourished in the 3rd millennium BCE; today the basin is served by one of the world’s largest contiguous irrigation systems.
The river drops out of high mountains into a dry plain, then spreads its value through canals. The same geography that favored brick cities also asks modern farmers to balance floods, silt, groundwater and heat.
