THE SEA THAT GUARDED
Saved Twice by a Storm at Sea — Japan · The Archipelago
Japan is a wall of ~14,000 islands set behind a moat of open sea. Twice, in 1274 and 1281, the largest invasion fleets of their age — Kublai Khan's Mongols — were wrecked by storms before they could secure the islands, typhoons the Japanese later called kamikaze, the 'divine wind'.
A sea border is a defence that needs no soldiers, and for Japan it proved decisive: the Mongols had overrun the largest land empire in history, but the crossing to Kyushu put their fleets at the mercy of the weather, and twice the typhoons came. Protected by water, Japan kept its rulers and its culture largely its own for centuries — and in 2023 a careful recount found it has not 6,852 islands but about 14,125.
