北欧平原自法国几乎不间断地延伸到俄罗斯，越往东越宽。它平坦，少有天然屏障，于是成了欧洲的入侵走廊——1812 年的拿破仑与 1941 年的希特勒都沿它向莫斯科进军，又都被它的辽阔与寒冬吞没。
平原上少有走向合适、能挡住军队的河流或山脉，因而易于行军、难于设防——这让其上的国家既不安又好扩张，永远在寻一条可守之线。可正是这份平坦，越往东越宽，每一次进逼俄罗斯都在更深的空间里愈拉愈薄，直到严寒了结一切。地理敞开了门，又在他们身后把门关上。
The North European Plain sweeps almost unbroken from France to Russia, widening as it runs east. Flat and short of natural barriers, it has been the continent's invasion corridor — Napoleon in 1812 and Hitler in 1941 both marched its breadth toward Moscow, and both were swallowed by its distances and winter.
With few rivers or ranges running the right way to stop an army, the plain is easy to march across and hard to defend — which has made the states on it anxious and expansionist, forever seeking a defensible line. But the same flatness that lets an invader in keeps widening eastward, so each advance on Russia stretched thinner over deeper space until the cold finished it. Geography offered the door, then closed it behind them.
