The Plain Between Mountains and Sea — Italy · Po Valley

The Po, Italy’s longest river at about 652 km, gathers Alpine water into the country’s broadest northern plain. The valley favored rice fields, industry and dense towns between the Alps, Apennines and Adriatic.

The Po Valley is a bowl with a drain. Snowmelt, fog, canals and cities gather in the same low space, making northern Italy feel less like peninsula and more like river plain.
