For four centuries the Rhine was Rome's northern wall; the empire's edge ran along the water, and forts like Cologne and Mainz grew into cities. Today the same ~1,230 km river is Europe's busiest waterway, carrying some 300 million tonnes of cargo a year.

A wide, deep, navigable river makes a natural line to defend and a natural channel to trade — and the Rhine was both. Rome stationed legions along its west bank and largely stopped there; the cities they founded still stand. When the frontier became a highway, the same water that divided Europe began to stitch it together.
