THE SAND SEA

An Ocean You Cross by Camel — Africa · The Sahara

The Sahara is about 9.2 million km² — nearly the size of China — and for centuries traders crossed it like an ocean, camel caravans carrying Saharan salt south and West African gold north between desert-port cities like Timbuktu.

A desert this vast is not empty space but a barrier with crossings, and the camel made the crossings possible — a 'ship of the desert' that could go for days between wells. Whoever could move salt, gold and books across the sand grew wealthy at its edges; Timbuktu sat where the routes met the river, and became a byword for the ends of the earth. The Sahara divided North Africa from the rest, then quietly linked them.
