CUT THROUGH SAND

The Shortcut Geography Allowed — Egypt · Suez Isthmus

The Suez Canal is 193.3 km long, a sea-level cut through the isthmus between the Mediterranean and Red Sea. The canal matters because the desert happened to be narrow enough to turn an ocean route into a trench.

Unlike a strait, Suez is a human incision in a natural isthmus. It turned the long route around Africa into a choice, and made Egyptian sand a hinge in global logistics.
