The Ridges Behind the Plain — Iran–Iraq · Zagros Mountains

The Zagros run roughly 1,500–1,600 km along the edge of the Iranian Plateau. Their folded ridges separate the Mesopotamian lowland from highland valleys, but also feed passes, pastures and winter rain farming.

From Iraq, the mountains appear as a wall. Inside, they are corridors of valleys where herds, oak woods and villages use the folds rather than fighting them.
